Balak, the King of Moab is afraid of Israel so he hires a well known 'prophet' who gets paid for consulting the spirit world. Balak thinks that Balaam is ultimately more powerful than Israel's God and believes that his curses will help him secure a victory. It's not often we learn a lesson from a pagan who believes a physical battle can be fought in the spiritual realm.
